"It took about a nanosecond on Sunday for Kai Gleusteen to establish
his credentials as an important violinist. The young Canadian began
his recital at the Phillips Collection with the first of Prokofiev's
violin sonatas, its portentousness couched in terms so human that the
violin's voice might have been mistaken for a singer's.
Gleusteen has a huge palette available for his instrument's colors.
He can attack phrases with aggressive harshness, he can muse with extraordinary
delicacy over filigrees of runs, and he can bounce jovially through
cheerful passages. What he does better than most violinists, however,
is to add to this palette a dimension of inflection vivid enough to
leave behind an impression of text unspoken.
The pieces on this program -- the Prokofiev, the Grieg C Minor Sonata
No. 3 and shorter works by Dohnanyi and Kreisler -- could each have
served as the virtuoso highlight of a concert. That Gleusteen was able
to clump them together and to make each a musical and artistic, rather
than athletic, event is testimony to his imagination and powers of
concentration.
